Apparatjik @ WMF, Berlin

Apparatjik

Happening of the evenings of the fourth night of the Club Transmediale at the WMF club was the first ever live performance of the all-star collective Apparatjik bringing together Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, singer/guitarist Jonas Bjerre of Mew, guitarist/keyboardist Magne Furuholmen from a-ha, and producer Martin Terefe. Merging music, art, fashion and even science, Apparatjik are heavily inspired by the Bauhaus movement and especially the Bauhaus Bühne which is translated in their opulent and optically appealing stage setup. But on a musical level it presents itself rather undaring, unspectacular yet conventional, being situated in the tension area between Hot Chip, Animal Collective and The Pet Shop Boys.

But secret gem of the evening surely was the swiss monkey drummer Michael Wertmüller performing his three compositions resulting of a commission from the Electronic Studios of Berlin Academy of Arts. Seeing a virtuoso like him playing bars like

19·7 , 39·7 , 41·5 , 57·7 , 97·9
256   1024  4046   512   2048

is just pure madness and magic, and far out of the comprehension of my little birdbrain.
